1998 Catalina 36 MkII
“Gran Cielo” [“Big Sky”] is a Catalina 36 MkII – Cruising World’s Boat of the Year! She is in great condition and ready to cruise the West Coast or sail to Mexico. A beautiful sailor, she recently completed a 350 mile offshore passage from San Francisco Bay to Marina Del Rey. Gran Cielo is well-outfitted with new B&G electronics, under-deck autopilot, radar, refrigerator, large water tanks and a roller-furling Quantum headsail. A new Rocna Vulcan anchor rides on the bow, connected to the rope/chain anchor rode and windlass.
The hull and elegant deck profile ensure seaworthy handling and timeless looks, and Gerry Douglas and the Catalina design team’s meticulous approach to the interior optimizes every ergonomic detail.
Sleeping seven, Gran Cielo has a v-berth double in the bow cabin, a salon table to port convertible into a double berth, tandem seats with table on starboard that converts to a single, and a double berth that spans the stern – a virtually king size bed. The salon table seats six and has integrated storage. The dual-entry head is located immediately aft of the forward stateroom, on the port side. The head can be entered from the forward stateroom or from the salon. A generous hanging locker is in the bow, aft of the berth and a set of drawers is to starboard in the salon. The navigation area with electrical panel is to starboard, near the companionway.
The galley is “L-shaped” with easy access to the companionway to pass up meals to the crew in the cockpit. With a double-stainless sink and 2-burner propane stove with oven and broiler, she is ready for great meals on your adventures. The 12v refrigerator is top loading and generously sized for longer voyages.
Catalina made good use of the interior space to provide myriad storage compartments and cubbies for all your gear.
All sheets and halyards are lead aft to the cockpit to make sail handling and trimming easy for a short-handed crew. All sheets and halyards were recently replaced and upgraded.
The walk-through transom makes accessing the stern ladder and the hot/cold pressure shower on the stern easy.
Cruising speed is 6+ knots with the 35hp Universal M35B engine. The boat is highly maneuverable – making docking and close-quarters maneuvers easy.
Don’t miss out on your opportunity to own this great performing cruiser! Call today to set a time to view Gran Cielo at a private marina in Marina Del Rey, CA.

Because the Catalina 36 is easily handled by a couple, has a big comfortable cockpit, a spacious interior with two private cabins and the integrity to pursue cruising dreams, many experienced sailors consider the Catalina 36 the perfect boat for their sailing lifestyle. The Catalina 36 MkII has all the important characteristics that made the original the most popular 36-foot sailboat in the world. The Mark II Catalina 36 is built in the same seakindly moderate displacement hull. It tracks surely and performs well in a variety of conditions. The deck is the classic trunk cabin configuration - proven, comfortable and functional. The main cabin and galley have received special attention to design and detail. The galley is a functional 'U' shape, with composite countertops, the sinks are near centerline for proper drainage underway. A large refrigerated ice box is aft and a dry food locker is forward. A gimballed, stainless steel LPG stove with oven is standard equipment. The main cabin can be arranged with a dinette or traditional table. The two seats and game table to starboard can be made into a settee or berth with the cushions provided. The entertainment center cabinet can be fitted with a stereo and concealed TV. The main cabin and all interior teak has the warmth and durability only obtained with multiple coats of varnish. The 36 has stainless steel hand rails and anodized spars, reducing maintenance on deck and extending the sailing season. The mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems have been re-engineered to increase dependability and accessibility. Engine access, for example, is excellent, with the one-piece, insulated enclosure removed. The hull is rugged, hand-laminated, solid fiberglass; the keel is lead with integrally cast stainless steel bolts. The mast is stepped through the deck on the keel and has inline spreaders and fore and aft lower shrouds, a sturdy arrangement that is easy to tune.
